Over-the-counter (OTC) medications are drugs that can be purchased without a prescription. They are commonly used to relieve symptoms like fever, pain, or congestion. Always use OTC medications according to the manufacturer’s instructions and consult our office before administering them to ensure they are appropriate for your child’s age, weight, and health condition.

For children, the most commonly used OTC medications for fever and pain relief are:

• Acetaminophen (Tylenol): Generally used for children aged 2 months and older. It can help reduce fever and relieve pain. Find the correct dose for your child based on their weight.

• Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin): Suitable for children aged 6 months and older. It also helps reduce fever and relieve pain. Find the correct dose for your child based on their weight.

Dosage is typically based on your child’s weight. Follow the dosing instructions on the medication packaging or see dosing tables linked on this page. Using the dosing chart on the medication label, measure the dose carefully with the provided measuring device. Avoid using household spoons as they may not provide an accurate measurement.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends against using over-the-counter cough and cold medications in children under 4 years old due to potential risks and limited effectiveness. For young children, focus on using saline nasal drops, gentle nasal suction, and/or a humidifier.

For allergy symptoms, you may use antihistamines (e.g., Diphenhydramine, Loratadine), which can help relieve symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes. Seek medical assistance immediately if your child is experiencing a Severe Allergic Reaction.

Consult the office if:

• Your child is younger than the minimum age recommended for the medication.

• Your child has underlying health conditions or is taking other medications.

• You are unsure about the correct dosage or potential side effects.

• The symptoms persist or worsen despite OTC treatment.

If you suspect an overdose or if your child shows symptoms of an overdose (such as drowsiness, nausea, or a rapid heartbeat), contact the office or seek emergency medical attention immediately.
